Do buy here pay here lots report to the credit bureaus?

Many don't, and you should never assume it either way — ask before you sign, because it decides whether two years of on-time payments do anything for your credit at all.

Reporting costs the lot money and takes setup with each bureau, so smaller independent lots often skip it. The frustrating result is that you can pay a car off in full, every payment on time, and finish with a credit report that looks exactly like it did the day you started.

It cuts the other way too, and this is the part worth understanding. A lot that doesn't report your payments usually will still report a repossession, or sell the unpaid balance to a collection agency that reports it. So the damage lands on your file even when the good history doesn't. Reporting isn't automatically in your favour — but silence isn't protection either.

Ask it plainly: do you report to Experian, Equifax or TransUnion, and do you report on-time payments or only defaults? If building credit is part of why you're buying, that answer should steer which lot you use. Get it in writing if you can.
